Job description:

This position begins August 1, 2026

We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Upper School Social Studies Teacher to join our educational team. The Upper School Social Studies Teacher will play a crucial role in cultivating students' understanding of human societies, cultures, and systems, as well as their ability to think critically about the social, political, and economic forces shaping the world. The ideal candidate will inspire a passion for social studies, foster critical thinking skills, and create an inclusive and engaging learning environment that prepares students to be informed and active global citizens.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an engaging upper school social studies curriculum covering subjects such as world history, geography, civics, economics, and sociology.
  • Design and deliver inquiry-based lessons that encourage critical thinking, analysis, discussion, and the exploration of diverse perspectives on historical and contemporary issues.
  • Integrate a variety of instructional resources, including primary and secondary sources, maps, artifacts, texts, and multimedia materials to strengthen students’ research and analytical skills.
  • Facilitate meaningful classroom discussions and debates that promote respectful dialogue, civic engagement, and thoughtful reflection on complex social issues.
  • Guide students in developing strong writing, research, and presentation skills through analytical essays, projects, and evidence-based arguments.
  • Utilize technology and digital resources to enhance instruction, collaboration, and digital literacy within the social studies classroom.
  • Assess student learning through a variety of formative and summative methods, providing timely and constructive feedback to support growth and achievement.
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and student-centered classroom environment where all students feel valued, respected, and empowered to participate actively in their learning.
  • Collaborate closely with colleagues on curriculum development, interdisciplinary opportunities, and strategies to support student success.
  • Serve as an advisor and contribute positively to the life and culture of the Upper School community.
  • Participate actively in faculty meetings, professional development, student activities, and school events.
  • Support the school’s commitment to developing leadership, character, and strong student relationships.
  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress, academic expectations, and opportunities for involvement in their child’s education.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Studies, History, Education, or related field (Required).
  • Teaching certification/license in Social Studies or related subject area (Preferred).
  • Prior experience teaching social studies at the upper school level preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of social studies content areas, including history, geography, civics, economics, and sociology.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and motivate students in the study of social studies.
  • Creativity and innovation in lesson planning and instructional delivery.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Dedication to fostering a positive and inclusive classroom community.
  • Proficiency in educational technology tools and resources.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional growth and development.
