The Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE) is a licensed Registered Nurse who functions as a Nursing Professional Development (NPD) practitioner. This role is responsible for designing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs and strategies that support high‑quality, safe, and patient‑centered care. The CNE advances professional nursing practice by facilitating learning, improving clinical performance, and supporting role competence across the continuum of care.
The Clinical Nurse Educator works within both the practice environment and the learning environment, applying educational theory, evidence‑based practice (EBP), and clinical expertise to promote the effective translation of knowledge and skills into practice. Through collaboration, consultation, and leadership, the CNE supports lifelong learning and contributes to organizational outcomes that protect the public and ensure excellence in care delivery.

The Clinical Nurse Educator demonstrates expert Nursing Professional Development practice through the following essential functions:
Conducts comprehensive learning needs assessments by collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing data from educational activities, clinical outcomes, performance measures, quality indicators, and stakeholder input across individuals, units, and the organization
Identifies practice gaps, issues, and trends by interpreting assessment findings and organizational data to determine root causes and prioritize educational or practice-based interventions
Develops education plans, curricula, and programs that incorporate evidence-based strategies, instructional design principles, and alternative approaches to achieve defined educational and organizational outcomes
Implements educational interventions using appropriate teaching and learning methodologies, simulation, technology-enhanced learning, coaching, and evidence-based instructional strategies
Evaluates the effectiveness of education and progression toward outcomes, using assessment results, performance metrics, and learner feedback to refine and improve educational plans.
Leads and supports change initiatives by collaborating with leaders and teams to influence practice decisions, strengthen clinical performance, and promote adoption of evidence-based standards
Advances nursing excellence and Magnet® enculturation by contributing to Magnet-related initiatives, supporting structure and processes aligned with the Magnet Model, and participating in preparation and maintenance of Magnet Recognition documentation
Maintains clinical competence and practice credibility in relevant specialty areas and, when appropriate, participates in direct patient care to ensure ongoing alignment with current practice and patient care standards
Position Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree - BSN required [from an accredited school of nursing], Master’s Degree - MSN preferred; if master’s degree is not in nursing, applicants, must have a BSN
Active Florida or multi-state RN license, required
National Certification in Professional Development and/or Nursing Clinical Specialty, preferred
Minimum 3 years of recent clinical nursing experience (More may be required for specialty areas)
Previous experience as a preceptor, charge nurse, or educator required
NPD‑BC within 2 years.
BLS required
PALS required (except NICU)
NRP required (NICU)
ACLS required (ED, PreOp and PACU)
APHON Pediatric Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider within one year of hire – Hem/Onc & Infusion Clinical Nurse Educator
Specialty certifications:
CCRN‑P (PICU/CCCU)
RNC‑NIC (NICU)
CPEN/CEN (ED)
CPN (general pediatrics)
Competency with learning technologies, simulation, and EHR education (Epic preferred).
Experience supporting enterprise‑wide education, competencies, or projects
Participation in EBP, QI, research, or Magnet® initiatives
